Why do you try to stay fit?
Three members of my family died at a very early
age. I want to LIVE OUT LOUD until I’m a very old age to honour their lives and
all that they missed.

What  fitness activity do you wish you had more time for? I wish I lived near the water in a climate that  allowed me to kayak 12 months of the  year.

Do you have a healthy eating  tip?
Always choose fresh foods over packaged or processed foods.

Favourite fruit: Raspberries. How could you go wrong? Each one is  bursting with summer flavour.

Favourite breakfast food?  I’m not a big fan of breakfast food but if I had
to pick – a California Breakfast Parfait – greek yogourt, fresh fruit, trail mix
and honey. Not exactly low-fat but delicious.

Favourite book: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. I read it for the first time when I was 11 and 40 years later I still love it.

Celebrity crush?  No celebrities just this incredibly stylin’ (he  has the most incredible shoes) handsome man that occasionally rides on the 98  bus. Seriously, I have to figure out how to discretely take his pic.

Embarrassing TV indulgence: That I don’t watch TV – it excludes me from half of the conversations  in the office.

Favourite board / card game?  Backgammon

Favourite sport to watch?
Any race! Kayaking, skiing, running, swimming…

What 3 things could you not live without?  Love, laughter and music.

Three things we would never hear you say?
"No red wine for me  please."
"Let’s watch a  sitcom."
"I’m a homebody."

Colin Sell - HSF (Ottawa)

Why do you try to stay fit?  I would like to continue being active in sports and recreational
activities and I have a competitive nature.  I strive to be at the top of  my game, which requires a certain level of fitness.  In addition, we work  most of our lives and I want to be healthy when I reach my retirement years so that I can actually enjoy them.

Do you have any fitness goals this year?  I don’t normally  set fitness goals, however I would like to use my Bowflex more often than I  do.

What fitness activity do you wish you had more time for?  Working  out with weights or resistance.  I’ve had too much going on lately to set aside some time for this.

Do you have a healthy eating tip?  Eat as many  vegetables as you can each day (preferably not of the deep-fried variety) and limit processed foods/fast food.

Favourite vegetable: Beets are  great!

Favourite breakfast food:  Bacon!

Favourite movie: There are too many good movies to choose from, so I’ll list my
top three: Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption

Celebrity crush? Mila Kunis/Scarlett Johansson

Embarrassing TV indulgence:  Grey’s Anatomy...

Favourite board / card game:  Settlers of Catan  (geeky name, but one of the best board games out there: think of a cross between Monopoly and Risk)

Favourite sport to watch?  Hockey (by far).

What 3 things could you not live without?  Air, water, and  food in that order.

Three things we would never hear you say?

"Country music takes some serious talent."
"No beer for me. I’ve trying to watch my carbs."

Why do you try to stay fit?
I really have no idea...it’s  an odd compulsion that I can seem to shake.

Do you have any fitness goals this year?
Well….to look good at the beach, obviously.   I also need to be fit for my weekend job as a bouncer in Hull.

What  fitness activity do you wish you had more time for?  Penitentiary style weight  lifting

Do you have a healthy eating  tip?  Pack a bag of carrots and tomatoes every day.  Coworkers always appreciate the background noise of crunchy carrots.

Favourite fruit: At this time of year, I love rhubarb..pies, stew, raw with some sugar...all very good.

Favourite breakfast food?  Well, my favourite would have to be Estonian-style
pancakes.

Favourite movie:
Planes, Trains and Automobiles never gets old.
Neither does The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

Celebrity crush?
I wouldn’t call them celebrities yet, and I  wouldn’t call it a crush...but this band is amazing: Fiftymen.

Embarrassing TV indulgence:  It is not embarrassing, but I love watching Dukes of Hazzard reruns when I get the chance.

few drinks instead? I don’t know if Hungry Hippo is a board game….but it can be
exciting.

Favourite sport to watch?
Cross country skiing, of course.

What 3 things could you not live without?  Leaving my wife aside (which is a given, but makes for a boring answer)- Coffee.  Cross country skis.  Simultaneous access to a sauna, a cold lake, and ice cold beer.

Three things we would never hear you say?
"I really wish my work involved more numbers and spreadsheets."
"I wish it would stop snowing."

Why do you try to stay fit?

Just to continually improve on the routine I have. Nothing glamorous like a 10k or marathon are in my sights.

Why do you try to stay fit? First of all  to stay healthy and of course to be able to run around with the kids!

Do you have any fitness goals this year? I would love  to be able to bike to work by the end of the summer.

What  fitness activity do you wish you had more time for? Time what time? Seriously I would love to have more time to bike and do kayaking with my husband.

Do you have a healthy eating tip? Hum difficult for me to choose just one if you know what I mean ;-) An easy one to remember is the 50-25-25 rule... half your plate should be vegetables + quarter  of your plate should be grain products (whole grain is best)  + the last quarter should be filled by a protein.

Favourite fruit: That would probably be homemade strawberry shortcake (the scone type not the cake type) with fresh strawberries from the Potager Eardley in Aylmer.

Favourite breakfast food? PB & J toast is a staple for me weekdays. We love to have a special breakfast on the weekend with lots of fruits and either my husband’s fantastic oatmeal pancakes  or my homemade blueberry waffles.

Why do you try to stay fit? I have two very practical reasons. First, I don’t  want continually to have to buy a new wardrobe for an expanding waistline. And second, when I run for a bus, I want to have some confidence that I will  actually catch it and not feel like throwing up on the driver when I board (can  you tell I hate waiting for the bus?).

Do you have any fitness goals this year?
At about the 6km mark on one of my regular running  routes, I have the option of taking a relatively short (about 300m) but very  steep uphill trail.  I’d love to be able to run up that hill without  stopping and feel decent enough when I get to the top to continue on with my run  like nothing difficult has just happened.  BTW, I’m nowhere close to achieving that goal!

What  fitness activity do you wish you had more time for? Long nature hikes outside the  city.

Do you have a healthy eating tip? Control what food you bring into your house. Whenever I get a  junk food craving, it makes it more difficult to indulge that craving if I don’t  have the food lying around the house.  If I consistently had potato chips  at home, I’d be 100 pounds heavier!

Favourite vegetable: Favourite vegetable is a Chinese green, which directly translated from what my mother calls it in Cantonese into English is “cabbage ear”.
It’s only available for a few weeks in select Chinese produce markets in early
spring.  It’s the side shoot off an overwintered cabbage plant after the cabbage head is cut off in the fall.

Favourite breakfast food?
At home: lemon meringue yogurt with wild blueberries and vanilla almond granola. Out at a restaurant: corned beef hash with basted eggs.
What I really would eat if it was around:  strawberry rhubarb pie, of course with vanilla ice cream (yup, pie and ice cream even for breakfast).

Favourite movie: The Bridge on the River Kwai – not a wasted scene in the entire
movie.

Celebrity crush?
Yannick Bisson

Embarrassing TV indulgence: It’s  kind of appropriate for this game, but I’m still embarrassed to admit I watch it: The Biggest Loser

Favourite board / card game? Does mah jong count?

Favourite sport to  watch? Curling (is it a sport?) - “HURRY HARD”

What 3 things could you not live without? Some sort of musical outlet (for the past 15 years, primarily that’s been singing in a  choir),  Shorts (I wear shorts pretty much year round), PVR, and I guess the TV goes along with it.

Three things we would never hear you  say?
“So looking forward to the Celine Dion concert.”
“Christy Clark’s just the best premier ever.”
“I’d win a beard/moustache growing contest any day.”

Why do you try to stay fit? I try to program much of it into my day.  I  walk the kids to school, I walk my dog (endlessly) and walk to the store for  groceries.  I take public transit, which requires more walking.  I  joined a masters swim team 10 years ago and learned that being on a team is a  good motivator for the days you feel like doing nothing.  And much of my  social time is exercise related.  I get up really early to ride my bike  with friends, and have even got my husband hooked. We went on our first sports oriented vacation this year:  a biking trip.

Do you have any fitness goals this year? To be fit enough to ride a Century ride i.e. 160km  in August.  It requires stamina and the right nutrition.

Do you have a healthy eating  tip? I have lots!  My favorite one is to eat a
fruit or veg every time you sit down to a meal or snack i.e. 5 times a day.

Favourite fruit/vegetable: I love beets right now.  And local strawberries.

Favourite breakfast food? Greek yogurt with figs, honey and nuts.  Yum!

Favourite book: Captain Corelli’s Mandolin is a great book but don’t see the movie.

Celebrity crush? Zac Efron!!

Embarrassing TV indulgence: Music videos.

Favourite board / card  game? Go fish with my 5 yr old son at bedtime.

Favourite sport to watch? Cycling, right now.  100th anniversary of Tour de Frances coming in July so watch for  it!  Despite Herculean efforts, these men must keep a poker face to as not  to show fatigue to their rivals, despite riding 40km/yr up 20% graded hills for hours.  Insane!

What 3 things could you not live  without? Chocolate, duh!  Great friends (and husband), my bike.

Three things we would never hear you say?
 1.    Let’s get up early.
  2.   Let’s get another dog.

Do you have any fitness goals this  year? To walk at least 10,000 steps a day.

Do you have a healthy eating tip? Fruits and vegetables.  Also, I can highly recommend the  Looneyspoons Collection Cookbook – so many great recipes. Use it all the  time.

Why do you stay fit?
To feel good! Participating in a fitness related activity is good for the mind, body, and soul. It is also another way to escape our technology driven society by being around human beings (in the flesh) and working on the basics of  communication and respect!

Do you have any fitness goals this year?
I would like to be able to participate in a 5km & 10km run. I am  testing out my knees to see if I can get back into running. I would also like to  do the 25 or 50KM Tour de l’île in Montreal this summer.

Why do you stay fit? It has always been a life-long commitment for me and as I age, I see the true benefits as I don't want to be an old guy that sits around and lets the world revolve around him.  I also like to set a good standard for my kids.

Do you have any fitness goals this year?
I want to ride to work more often this year and have a more consistent weight training on a weekly basis.

Do you have a healthy eating tip? I always keep a piece of  fruit or vegetable around for when I get a hunger craving - it works (and stops me from eating more chocolate)

Favourite fruit? Blueberries - I buy them in bulk when they are in season and on sale at the grocery store - my biggest  challenge is keeping them in the fridge as my kids love them too.

Favourite healthy snack? Gorp - we use it for  bike trips - a combination of nuts, seeds, dark chocolate chips, raisins - but  you can only eat a lot of this if you are really active - it's very calorie dense

Embarrassing TV indulgence? Glee

What 3 things could you not live without? Cell phone, my bike, beer

Three things we would never hear you say?
“I hope I beat this year's rush for the 1/2  marathon registration”
